Chapter Twelve

Though Jemma initially felt uncomfortable about Pearl and her mother prying into her love life, she ended up telling them about Malcom. They were confused at first, imagining a retired cop to be a lot older, but quickly became interested as she shared some of the details of the case and their work together.

“You guys pretty much are dating,” Pearl argued. “You’ve been out together several times.”

“They weren’t dates, they were work-related excursions,” Jemma pointed out. “We’ve only been on one real date.”

“He clearly likes you,” she said confidently.

Oddly, Jemma found it refreshing to talk to her mother and sister about her worries over Malcom. She didn’t feel she could be open about that with him just now, and his reticence had bothered her more than she’d cared to admit. Being able to tell them her worries, and hear them affirm Malcom’s interest, was cathartic.

It also felt nice to have an evening out with them without the pressure of Pearl’s wedding. Pearl seemed to have taken the day off from planning to just spend time with her, and the thought made her feel good.

Jemma didn’t know if it was the relief she felt from talking to her family, or the promise of dinner out with Malcom, or both, but she didn’t have nightmares that night. She woke up the next day, feeling refreshed for once.

Her phone lit up, a text coming through. It was Malcom.

I didn’t hear from you last night, so I hope that means you had a good time with your mom and sister. I hope you slept well.

Jemma beamed, feeling giddy with the knowledge that Malcom had been thinking about her.

It went well, thanks. Did you sleep all right?

She got up and made herself breakfast, glancing at her phone entirely too often as she waited for him to get back to her. He finally texted back just as she took her first bite of cereal.

Well enough. Andre can meet us at the police station at ten. Does that work for you?

Jemma looked at the time. She had just under an hour to eat breakfast and get ready.

I’ll be there.

She took extra care that morning as she dressed and did her hair and makeup, wanting to look like a qualified investigator at the station, but also secretly hoping for another compliment from Malcom. After finally settling on a blue flowered blouse and navy dress pants, she grabbed her bag and hurried out the door.

Jemma saw Malcom heading for the doors as she got out of her truck.

“Malcom!” she called. He turned, smiling when he saw that it was her speaking to him. He jogged over to her.

“Sorry I gave you the time sort of last minute,” he said.

“No worries,” she replied.

“You look really nice, as always,” he said. She felt a surge of butterflies in her stomach.

“Thanks,” she said. “You too.”

He really did look good, dressed today in a green, long-sleeve, button up with beige slacks.

“Thanks,” he said, opening the door for her. “Andre should be here any minute.
